Department of Biotechnology
Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing applied sciences in this century. It can be simply defined as the fusion of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular biology and is aimed at using microorganisms and cells to manufacture useful products for human welfare. Biotechnology with a wide application and multi-various advantage is now being adopted virtually in all industries such as Pharmaceuticals Industry, Textile Industry, and Environmental clean up operation, manufacturers of household products, Food processing and Forensics laboratory.
It also offers insights in to new branches such as Bionics, Bioinformatics and Nanotechnology which are nothing but fusion of Information Technology, Life Science and Physical science.
Concepts in Biotechnology are derived from experiments and powerful experimental tools. The Reputation of the Department is based on the practical utility and quality of the equipment that is available to the students. The Department is equipped with various sophisticated and state-of the art equipments imported from different parts of the globe such as Binocular microscopes, Electronic shaker, Electrophoretic apparatus, High speed centrifuges, modernized working tables, Refrigerator centrifuges, Trinocular Research microscopes and Gradient PCR, UV/ visible spectrophotometer, BOD Incubator, Gel Documentation, Co2 Incubator, Fermentor, Quartz Distillation Unit, Germ plasm Collection Unit for Cyanobacteria.
The Molecular Biology lab has facilities for genetic engineering (recombinant DNA technology), analysis and comparative studies. The equipment and reagents required for cloning, studying of genes, their expression and comparison are available. Facilities for amplification of DNA by Gradient PCR, separation and further sequencing are all available under one roof.
Cytogenetics Laboratory is a full research laboratory offering high quality chromosomal analyses on amniotic fluid, peripheral blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes, skin biopsies, malignant tissues and products of conception. Molecular cytogenetic analyses, by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), is offered for aneuploidy detection, microdeletion syndromes, marker chromosome identification, translocation detection, subtelomeres, Her2/neu, and mosaicism screens. The laboratory also cultures fibroblasts and amniocytes for send-out testing.
